What maternity rights do you have?

There are seven rights laid down in law relating to maternity leave and your rights to work. Here we cover the basics. They are:-

  • Your right not to be dismissed on grounds of pregnancy or childbirth.
  • A right to maternity leave.
  • A right for you to return to work after maternity leave.
  • A right to fair maternity pay.
  • Your right to return to work after Maternity Leave
  • You have a right to alternative work (or suspension if no other work is found) with the same pay on grounds of health and safety.
  • Time-off for your ante-natal classes.

These rights are quite wide-ranging and compliance can prove to be difficult and disruptive to employers. The law therefore places a heavy burden on the employee to follow strict procedures and timetables.
